Cosmetic Camouflage Service
« on: Monday, June 07, 2010, 08:57 »
If you think that you would feel better if you were able to conceal your vitiligo, the British Red Cross run an excellent free service provided by highly trained volunteers. Its purpose is to help people to disguise their skin problems. It is called the Skin Camouflage Service and it is available to people with vitiligo by referral through their GP or their dermatologist.

The British Association of Skin Camouflage (BASC) also offers an excellent service using both prescription and non-prescription products.   You can self-refer to a BASC practitioner although you may need to pay a fee.  We can send you leaflets of both these organisations giving full details about these services.  You can contact BASC for practitioners in your area (01254 703107)

Unlike skin camouflage, fake tans are not usually able to provide a perfect match with your own skin colour, but they do usually last for about four to six days before they have to be reapplied. They are very useful for large areas of vitiligo and can work on difficult areas where cosmetic camouflage is less effective such as the back of the hands

Cosmetic Camouflage has for me not been much use, as I already had fair skin before I lost the colour I had.  I found the whole process time consumming, plus then having to put sun block on top of that, well, I was one big sweaty mess!
My Sun safe and colour daily routine is now Dove summer glow and any sun block of spf 30 and over.  At the moment this makes me feel good and gives me confidence in all I do. :D

hi im new here just wanted to know if dove summer glow actually colours the white patches. I to have fair skin and this seems like a great alternative to camoflage makeup.

Hi there are a variety of fake tans that give a different artificial sun effect to the skin.  Some are very good for a light sun tanned effect whilst others give a much darker result.  A sun-tanning moisturiser such as Dove and Johnson's Holiday Tan both offer a "fair" shade and have been reported as being very effective.  The final cover colour required can be built up over two or three nights of applying the product.  The great benefit is that they don't rub or wash off so are very good for hands and if you want to go swimming.

Hiya,
I didn't have much luck with the British Red Cross camouflage service. I have freckles so finding the right shade to both, cover my freckles and be a good match to cover my patches was difficult.
I have used Dermablend in the past and I liked that, but not as much as Vichy's range of Dermablend (which unfortunately Boots and other sellers do not stock any more - if anyone knows where to get it let me know?). Anyway, since then I went down to Harvey Nichols in London to speak to its Cover FX department and the lady there told me to sit down and she did an absolutely amazing job.
Usually I wouldn't have done anything like that, I hate it when people run up to you as soon as you enter a shop (with their perfect skin lol) but she made me feel really comfortable and the products she used on me were great. I brought my most recent pallet in December and I haven't even made a dent in it.
I have tried using tinting moisturisers and tanning stuff but my personal opinion is that it's too much hassle - however I did know a girl who went to a specialist tanner once a month for her to tan in her patches (apparently that was good) but I reckon it'd be pretty expensive.

Hi Elisabetta and welcome to the forum.

I have contacted Vichy UK and the product you are looking for is available in the UK. They have given me the websites addresses of several UK companies who sell the setting powder. I have checked these sites and they will all deliver to Italy. I have quoted the links below for you to have a look at. I would suggest you check them all before deciding whether to place an order with any of them as prices do vary from one to another.

Hi Liz,

It's unfortuante that Boots don't seem to stock Dermablend anymore. The good news is that it can be obtained from various websites. If you check out my reply to Elisabetta (above) you'll see I've listed a few links which might be of interest.

I have recently tried to get camouflage treatment from the red cross which my doctor told me about I went onto their website which informed me it was being transferred to changing faces so I emailed them who then came back to say no it's still red cross in ur area, I then phoned red cross and the girl was very unhelpful told me they would send out a form to b filled out but wouldn't b next few days as they were busy! I was then told to take it to my doctor to fill out then send it back and I will b put on a waiting list which could take 6 months so not very impressed do far, I did however contact Vichy and found a chemist which sells it and the lady there was fantastic gave me special price and a free tester too plus a bag of samples.

Hi Ihogg77460
Would you mind telling us which chemist that stocks Vichy that you were talking about? I would like to go and have a look.
Thank you.
